People talk about getting rid of the toxic people in your life, how much better you’ll feel… how good it is for you.
I’m here to tell you the same is true for customers. If they’re toxic DUMP THEM.
I don’t care how much they spend.
I don’t care how long you’ve done business with them.
The thing is, if they truly are toxic: extremely harsh, malicious, or harmful regardless of the monetary value they really are killing you.
Killing your spirit – energy – desire to come to work – ability to be successful.
Here are a few ways to start to determine if an account is just annoying or toxic:
- is it an individual or EVERYONE you interact with there?
- are interactions occasionally harsh or ALWAYS?
- without regard to the money they bring in – do you sigh with relief when you consider never having to speak with them again?
Now go through the last 10 transactions/projects/etc you’ve done:
- is it “for” or “with” them in your mind?
- how many went smoothly without complaint or issue?
- what about of extra time did it take to satisfy them vs. your other clients?
- if you do a time vs. money calculation – are you still profitable?
Next I want you to calculate all the extra time, energy, enthusiasm you’ll regain if you dump them.
Dumping toxic customers isn’t just good for your mental health – it’s good for business!
Here is the best news – if you have a toxic prospect they are much easier to shed out of your account base; they’ve NOT spent any money with you so the impact is only positive! Get rid of them NOW.
