Connections Matter

I guess the question is, are you connected?

When I look at LinkedIn, on the surface it is like everyone putting their hands in the middle of a circle.

It appears no one is sure; what they’re doing, why it matters, what to do next.

People are trying to connect; the unfortunate truth is each of us is part of a group – yet not connected to each individual in that group.

Some people move forward and there are the beginnings of organization, picking and choosing where and when to connect. It feels a little like the hand pile game many people played as kids.

In the pile game there is someone always trying to win – taking their hand from the bottom of the pile and slapping it onto the top.

Although that behavior online is certainly playing in the LinkedIn community, is that really connecting?

Hopefully while playing the hand pile game the game itself begins to change.

You notice the people playing might think like you do or come up with unique solutions that intrigue you. There are commonalities and differences to cultivate. That is the beginning of true connection.

Those connections are from finding common ground, playing nice with each other, beginning to build a community of likeminded people.

Which is important, because this is where our best resources – prospects and customers – are going to come from, but it isn’t the last step.

Never forget that the final goal, our actual objective, is to connect with another person. Not a job title or function. Not a contact in your CRM system. Not a profile on LinkedIn. A living, breathing, human being.

That is when you are truly connected.

This week take the time to look at your Linkedin connections – have you just put your hands in the middle of a circle and gone no further?Decide who you want a closer connection with – make a plan and reach out to at least one person every single week who is in your network, yet you’re not sure who they are… or what you could do for them.

The more you learn about people, the more connections you make, the more opportunities will present themselves.

Here’s to you!
