12-18IN fresh snow, all my gear set, get up early, drive to the mountain… no lifts are running.
It’s super windy (50+ mph gusts at the summit windy).
I only live 18 miles away so I never check the website before I go – hey an ok day on the mountain is still better than a good day somewhere else in my book.
As I was waiting for Mother Nature to play nicely and drop the wind speeds to a level that lifts could be ridden & unloaded safely, I got to thinking.
The ONE thing stopping me from skiing was the wind. As people many of us have ONE thing that will derail us from being effective in our roles.
Your kryptonite if you’d like a different metaphor.
The thing is, we have a few steps we can take to ensure that ONE thing has less impact on us;
1. know what it is that effects your ability to be effective – think about what frustrates you in your job (maybe in life) to the point that you can’t think straight.
2. figure out what it feels like RIGHT before your brain disengages.
3. create a plan of what you will do instead of letting it get to you.
Need an example?
One manager I work with gets totally ticked off when people complain about accounts being “given” to other people on her team… when there is a very clear path to being on the list when accounts come up for distribution.
That is her ONE thing.
step 2 = she actually feels the top of her ears getting warm as her blood pressure rises.
step 3 = she takes a breath, lets it out, breathes in again and says to the salesperson – “I understand you’re upset, if you’d go to the requirements list and pull your criteria data together I’d be happy to review it with you.”
ps: most never come back because they don’t meet the requirements.
pps: those who do come back meet with her after she has had the opportunity to cool off and become a thinking rational manager again.
