Curiosity Didn’t Kill the Sale. It Sparked It!

You’ve probably heard the saying “Curiosity killed the cat.”

I grew up with my grandmother adding her own twist: “…but satisfaction brought him back.”

Maybe that’s because we were always getting ourselves into curiosity scrapes. You know, the kind where you didn’t get hurt… but you definitely got in trouble with Mom.

Fast forward to grown-up life in sales, I’ve noticed something:

The most successful inside salespeople I know?

  • About their prospects.
  • About how their customer’s business works.
  • About why someone said what they said in that tone, right then, in that way.

Even about sales itself, always trying to figure out “What just happened in that call?”

True curiosity shows up when you ask a follow-up question based on what they just said not what’s next on your call plan.

It’s when you pause and actually listen instead of jumping in with your pitch or your next clever insight.

It’s the unveiling of a work of art.

The unraveling of a mystery.

The satisfaction that only comes from figuring something out that matters to them and to you.

So this week, I challenge you:

💡 Let your curiosity drive the conversation.
🔍 Ask one more question than you normally would.
👂 Stay present — and really listen to the answer.

You might just find that what comes back is more satisfying than you expected.
