Have You Defined Your Ideal Inside Salesperson Yet?
Recently, I was working with a VP of Sales and a recruiter from HR. We weren’t just talking resumes—we were tackling something deeper: how to decrease ramp time for new inside salespeople. You know what came up? Hiring.
Not the kind of hiring where you post a job, cross your fingers, and hope for a rockstar. I mean intentional hiring. The kind that starts by defining what your ideal salesperson actually looks like.
Here’s my personal list of 7 Ideal Inside Salesperson Traits:
- Optimism – Not fake pep, but real belief that things will work out. It’s seeing a path forward even when it’s foggy.
- Persistence / Tenacity – Most reps quit before they’re remembered, the real work starts in outreach 6 to 12.
- Drive – The kind that doesn’t need micromanaging. They just go.
- Phone Voice & Personality – They sound like someone you actually want to talk to. That matters.
- Listen – Deeply. To what’s said, what isn’t, and how it’s delivered.
- Learn / Coachable – They try. They tweak. They toss what’s not working.
- Business Understanding – They get how decisions are made. And who makes them.
Much like in sales, if you haven’t defined your ideal candidate, how can you:
- Ask the right questions to uncover those traits?
- Look in the right places to find them?
- Know when you’ve got the right fit?
Here’s your nudge: take 15 minutes this week. Shut the door, open a doc, and sketch out your version of ideal. It’s your compass. One that helps you, your recruiters, and your future reps all head in the right direction.
What traits top your list?
Let’s get clear, intentional, and build better teams – on purpose.
