Ego – your inner view vs. what others see

Now that you have taken the time to create a clear view of yourself and a picture of how other people view your ego, it is time to finish Step 3: compare the two.

Is your view of yourself in alignment with how other people see you?

Many people find their view of themselves is different than how other people see them. They keep a wall between their inner thoughts or feelings and what they present to the world.

Here are a few examples of how that might show up:
Inner View                         What Others See
Stoic                                    Cold
Enthusiastic                       Flighty
Confident                           Arrogant
Collaborative                     Weak

Don’t go into this believing the differences heard are going to be negative. It may be your inner view is more judgmental:
Inner View                         What Others See
Critic                                    Devil’s Advocate
Resigned                             Agreeable
Indecisive                           Team Player
Obsessive                           Passionate

Once you understand the differences between how you see yourself and how others view you, it is time to decide what action you want to take.

Perhaps your ego isn’t as strong as you would like, leaving you with feelings of inadequacy or a lack of self-confidence, and you come across to your team as timid.

It is conceivable that your ego is a bit over inflated, making you seem arrogant, overbearing, or condescending to the people you work with.

You may even have a healthy ego already, along with alignment between how you see yourself and how other people view you.

Congratulations! No matter what you’ve found, you are on the way to becoming the leader you want to be.

Once you have done the introspection and investigation to have a clear view of your own ego, you will be more effective at looking outward to the people on your team.

You have walked the walk. Now you’ve earned the experience you need and can talk the talk.
