As you are prospecting you may wonder if voicemail works. the answer is YES!
To believe my answer, let’s talk about,
Voicemail Works WHEN:
- your individual voicemail messages are crafted to be short and meaningful
- each message sticks to a single topic
- the topic you use is about a problem you solve for your prospects
- voicemail is one method of many you use in a cadence series (along with email, social media, perhaps a card in the mail, or a drop by if you do that sort of thing)
and, drumroll please…. the individual you’re prospecting has the problems you mention AND can do something about them.
What WORKS means…
To decide that voicemail works – you have to decide what our prospecting goal actually is.
GOAL = to gain access for a conversation to someone new, that buys what we sell and needs what we do.
Although we’d love that goal to be instantaneous with a call back to our voicemail, in December 2023 ZoomInfo shared the average voicemail response rate is 4.8%.

Don’t get discouraged by that number – alone it means that you were able to speak with 5 out of 100 people you’ve never had conversations with before.
WAIT we’re not done, let’s go back to the actual goal of prospecting, to gain access for a conversation!
the reason I am telling you voicemail works IS:
- a voicemail / email combination get replies to email
- adding a LinkedIn connection request in your cadence is more likely to be accepted, if you’ve been leaving voicemail
- your prospect is more likely to answer later in your cadence if they’ve heard your voice
Personally, I still craft and leave voicemail messages that I believe are call back worthy. I judge that my voicemails are working based on having more conversations with new prospects.
