“Amateurs [musicians] practice until they can get it right; professionals practice until they can’t get it wrong” ~ Harold Craxton (who from what I’ve read sounds like an extraordinary musician and music teacher).
You’re a sales professional – for goodness sakes there really isn’t such a thing as a sales amateur.
Yet for most salespeople, the thought of practice… role-play… whatever you want to call it, makes them want to call in sick. So the idea of practicing until you can’t get it wrong is truly a gut wrenching thought.
Which is probably why before seeing this quote, I’d not quite thought of practice this way.
Sure I’ve written on:
- Practice – it doesn’t stop once the season starts
- Action Today = Future Results
- you ARE what you PRACTICE
- Movement – Action – Effort
Yet this idea of practicing until you can’t get it wrong struck me. Sure there are things I do effortlessly, but not everything that is as critical to my own success.
I don’t have an answer for myself on how to incorporate this idea completely into my sales practice.
What are you thinking about RIGHT NOW that you’ve practiced enough to get it right, while not enough so you can’t get it wrong?
