TIME: Focus on what you CAN control (part 1 of 2)

TIME: how you spend it is one of two things you can completely control.

People are always talking about time: most people don’t feel that they have enough of it. Everyone wastes more than they think. Add to that all of the things that are job requirements (aka other people’s priorities that impact you) and you might mistakenly imagine you can’t control how you use your time.

This week: use your priorities to help you self-manage your time.

I’m not saying schedule every moment – in fact I believe people need SPACE between their scheduled time for the unexpected, inbound requests that happen.

Yet too often those requests derail us from taking the actions we need to take for success with our goals and priorities.

Three FOCUS success factors:

  1. Solidify your Priorities
  2. Leverage the BURSTfocus® Protocol
  3. STOP doing things that don’t help you focus

#3 is one I’ve personally been having trouble with lately. When I’m waiting I have two strategies: read or play a game on my phone. Well I’ve noticed that I allow the game to be something I play… when I’m bored NOT when I’m in a waiting room somewhere.

That isn’t a good use of my time – and it certainly doesn’t help focus on a conversation if I’m playing! I had to regain control: so I’ve moved which screen the game is on, so I have to swipe further (giving me seconds to reconsider opening it at all). Plus made a deal with myself that I’m not going to play if I’m sitting at my desk.

Make sure you know what stops you from self-managing the things you can control…

NEXT week = part 2 on ATTITUDE!
