As a salesperson, the ONLY reason we prospect and reach out to customers is to create – build – expand business relationships.
With that said – why would a person or company use a bald-faced lie in their outreach?
Sure when I saw an email from a name I didn’t recognize Subject: [External]Left Voicemail, I clicked on it.
AWESOME you got me to open your email.
I then looked over at my phone, nope no red message waiting light.
My first thought was, that’s weird! So I glanced at the persons name again – Albin isn’t a common first name, I’m sure I would remember a voicemail from earlier…
Then I got annoyed. I felt duped by a SUBJECT LINE… argh.
Perhaps because I coach and train salespeople, I rolled it around in my brain more than someone else would.
This kind of behavior is why sales stereotypes include: liar, cheat, slimy, self-serving, etc.
Now I was pissed off.
Every sneaky self serving tactic used – makes it more difficult for every professional salesperson.
Professional doesn’t ONLY mean you get paid!
according to Merriam-Webster online:
c(1): characterized by or conforming to the technical or ethical standards of a profession
c(2): exhibiting a courteous, conscientious, and generally businesslike manner in the workplace
Starting off your email with a subject line that is misleading is NOT ethical, courteous, conscientious, or generally businesslike.
STOP… just stop.
Even more annoying to me is the fix would be soooooooooo very simple.
Option 1 – change your email outreach to Subject: email instead of voicemail
Option 2 – leave me a F*ing voicemail
