did you bother to unplug?

Last week I wrote about the days we need to RESTART, which is why I’m asking if you bothered to unplug over the weekend.

In the US we celebrated Independence Day on Saturday, which means some people had long… or extra long weekends. Yet in a world of 24×7 news and many people having their work email dumped onto their mobile phone, plus one number for personal and work… and… and… and…

did you bother to unplug?

I will not belabor the benefits beyond saying that Google returned “About 2,060,000 results (0.43 seconds)” when I typed in mental health and unplugging.

While I’d guess by the titles most of the articles and posts are about unplugging from technology, I’d like to consider the benefits of unplugging from your own thoughts.

There is a lot going on in our heads; if you’ve been around UpYourTeleSales for any length of time, you’ve probably read or heard me talk about mental trash, the stories we tell ourselves, and not being able to listen if we’re talking to ourselves.

That is all why I feel like it’s important to give you a few tips on how to unplug your brain!

step 1: identify an activity that allows you to get out of your own head. What that is is all about you – some examples include: playing music, reading fiction, going for a walk, taijiquan, yoga, making art, etc.

step 2: make a commitment to yourself for when you will practice that activity AND for how long.

Important Safety Tip: don’t lie to yourself, it’s better to commit to 15-minutes every other day and stick to it vs. 1 hr daily and allow yourself to make excuses (trust me this is personal experience talking, once you make an excuse it’s easy to give up).

step 3: begin.

If you didn’t bother to unplug over the weekend – start slowly, tonight.
