I keep reading people’s thoughts on on management… on leadership… on everything during “difficult times” and I started thinking of the basics that DO NOT CHANGE.
Long long ago, in a land far far away when I was being promoted into my first management position someone (I do wish I could give them credit) told me to never forget we:
* lead people
* manage things/tasks
3 Tips for Leading People:
1. “Take your job very seriously, without taking yourself too seriously.” ~ Jen Shirkani
2. Decide what can you, as an individual, can do to build your team UP.
3. Write down the name of every person on your team and then ask yourself: What is important to them?
“Leadership is the art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it.”
~ Dwight D. Eisenhower
Now take all those leadership tips and apply them when working on the something you want your inside salespeople to do.
3 Tips for Manage Tasks/Things:
1. Disciplinary action needs to be about the behavior or actions NOT the person.
2… so does PRAISE!
3. There are inside sales activities that lead to achievement. Have your list and manage those specific activities.
The confusing piece is that in a real work scenario, most of the time as an inside sales manager you have to lead and manage simultaneously.
It’s ok – take a deep breath and exhale – you’ve got this!
