and now somehow you’re on South Africa’s The Times newspaper site…
NOT that it’s ever happened to me…
Here is the thing about the internet – most people don’t loose hours at a time (at least not at work) but it’s the insidious loss of 3 to 5 minutes at a time throughout every day that adds up.
Here are my 3 top tips for how to stay on task, the last one may surprise you:
1. make internet time – inclusive time! What’s inclusive time? It means you ONLY allow yourself a specific amount of time for an activity – I find I need to set a calendar appointment for right after so a reminder pops up to STOP me from going over my allotted time.
2. know what you want BEFORE you start surfing! Instead of looking on the internet hoping for inspiration, have an idea of what you want to find. Team article on what? “Information” is too broad an idea – what new details on an industry or company will you look for today. You get the idea.
3. schedule time to be distracted! yes I said it, our brains need a break from thinking – if it’s sports scores or cat videos, schedule 3 blocks of 15 minutes for yourself to let your brain wander. The key is to use tip #1 and ensure it’s ONLY 15-minutes.
Make sure you’re using the internet as a success tool by using these productivity tips for staying on task.
