I was attempting to put my coat on and my grandmother came over to help me. I wouldn’t let her and instead proclaimed;
“My mother says it’s good for me to stwuggle” (aka struggle)
Now anytime someone is struggling we smile and say “it’s good for me to stwuggle.”
Implied in that one statement are a few lessons:
- attempt something difficult yourself.
- struggle may lead to failure or success – don’t be tied to the outcome.
- asking for assistance is a good thing – after you’ve made your own attempt.
#2 is perhaps the most difficult for inside sales leaders.
Yet it is critical to create an environment where failure isn’t seen as a negative – rather that an attempt was made and lessons learned.
Allowing your inside salespeople to stretch their abilities means they will grow in the long term, yet may fail today.
It also means you, as the leader are a bit vulnerable, showing where you have difficulty… showing it’s good for you to stwuggle.
